17-02-2007 Bamako Sahel Opera, attended by Prince Constantijn, Princess Laurentien, is an African opera composed and performed by the people of the Sahel countries to highlight African culture for both an African and a European audience was an idea that Prince Claus (1926-2002) brought to the Prince Claus Fund that was established in his name on his 70th birthday in 1996. He envisaged a spectacle of such quality and originality that it would steal the hearts of people throughout the world.

The Sahel region is home to enormous talent in the fields of dance, music, design and fashion. Central to the Prince’s idea was that this opera should discuss the relation between Europe and Africa in a humorous, critical and innovative way, and the production should be based on the cultures of the Sahel countries.
Through workshops held in Senegal, Mali and Guinnee Bissau in November 2005, musicians, singers and dancers from throughout the Sahel region were selected to take part. The final production includes a total of 67 singers, dancers and musicians from various Sahel countries. (Mode/fashion/klederdracht)
